Pre-Installation Checks
0 / 7
Confirm NVR location — rack mount or wall mount, 50mm minimum clearance on all sides for ventilation
Verify NVR channel count matches number of cameras being installed
If using external PoE switch: confirm minimum 30W per PoE port for PTZ cameras, 15W for fixed
Test all CAT6 runs with cable tester — max 90m per run, confirm no open pairs or crossed conductors
Check power supply at NVR location — 240V GPO within 1m, or UPS outlet if backup power required
Confirm IP addressing plan — default NVR IP is 192.168.1.64; cameras will auto-assign via NVR DHCP
Verify HDD(s) are installed — open NVR and seat drives firmly before powering on
Initial Setup
0 / 8
Connect monitor via HDMI or VGA — first boot configuration requires local display
Power on NVR — allow 90 seconds for full boot
Run Startup Wizard — set admin password (record it; cannot be recovered without factory reset)
Set date and time — select correct timezone for the state
Enable NTP time sync: Maintenance → NTP → server: pool.ntp.org
Set NVR to static IP address: System → Network → TCP/IP → change to static, set IP outside DHCP range
Initialise hard drives: Storage → HDD Management → select drive(s) → Initialise — this erases all existing data
Set recording schedule: Storage → Schedule → configure each channel (continuous or motion-triggered)
Camera Addition & Configuration
0 / 8
Add cameras: Camera → IP Camera → one-touch adding (auto-discovers PoE and network cameras)
Confirm all cameras appear in channel list with correct IP address and Online status
Change default camera passwords immediately — default is admin/12345 on older firmware
Adjust each camera angle — use live view on monitor, physically aim dome/bullet to cover intended zone
Set image settings per camera: adjust brightness, contrast, and WDR for each location (indoor vs outdoor)
Configure motion detection zones if using motion-triggered recording — draw zones around key areas
Enable smart features if scoped: VCA → Line Crossing or Intrusion Detection (requires supported camera model)
Review recorded image quality — verify night vision / IR range is adequate for camera placement
Remote Access Setup
0 / 6
Enable Hik-Connect P2P: System → Network → Advanced → Hik-Connect → Enable
Note the device verification code — printed on label on top or side of NVR
Download Hik-Connect app on customer's phone (iOS App Store or Google Play)
Add device in app: scan QR code on NVR label, or enter serial number + verification code manually
Test remote viewing on customer's phone — test on WiFi first, then switch to mobile data to confirm P2P works
If direct IP access required: set up port forwarding on customer's router — ports 8000 (data), 554 (RTSP), 80 (web)
Testing & Handover
0 / 9
Trigger test recording on each camera — wave in front of camera, confirm motion event appears in event log
Test playback: Storage → Playback → confirm all cameras have footage from the last hour
Note estimated storage duration on NVR status screen — advise customer (typically 7–30 days depending on HDD and camera count)
Test remote access one final time with customer present on their phone
Walk customer through Hik-Connect app: live view, playback scrubber, and how to enable notifications
Record all passwords in writing — provide copy to customer, retain copy in your commissioning file
Photograph completed NVR installation (rack position or wall mount, cabling tidy)
Photograph each camera in final position showing coverage angle
Provide customer with hand-drawn or printed site plan showing camera locations and coverage zones
⚠ Error Codes & Fault Fixes
No Image / Black Screen Camera offline or not detected by NVR
→ Check PoE power at port (test with PoE tester), ping camera IP from NVR, test cable with tester
Network Disconnected Camera has lost connection to NVR
→ Check PoE switch port status, cable continuity, restart camera from NVR: Camera → IP Camera → reboot
HDD Error / HDD Full Hard drive not initialised, full, or failed
→ Storage → HDD Management → check S.M.A.R.T. status; initialise if new drive; replace if S.M.A.R.T. error reported
IP Conflict Two devices sharing the same IP address on the network
→ Assign static IPs to cameras outside DHCP range, or set NVR to manage camera IPs via its built-in DHCP
Login Failed / Locked Incorrect admin password — account may be temporarily locked
→ Wait 30 minutes for lockout to clear. If password unknown, factory reset: hold reset button 10 seconds — all config is lost
Hik-Connect Offline P2P cloud connection failed — remote access not working
→ Check internet on customer's network, confirm Hik-Connect is enabled in NVR settings, check if port 8000 is blocked by ISP firewall
Video Loss Camera connected but no signal — cable or camera fault
→ Check camera power (PoE light on switch), reseat cable at camera end, test cable, swap PoE port to isolate fault
